Welcome to Shepherd Primary School Reception. We are really looking forward to getting to know you and your child and helping them to continue their learning journey.

Learning in Reception for the Spring Term

  • Topics will change on a regular basis and the setting will reflect these topics. We will write weekly updates on the boards next to the entrances. We will start the term with the topic of ‘Traditional Tales and Cooking.’ This topic will include learning about healthy eating, food from different cultures, festivals from around the world and traditional tales from around the world.
  • Communication & Language & Literacy: In Reception we will be teaching phonics daily, where your child will learn to recognise and write 4 phonemes each week. The phonics groups will be streamed and will therefore be smaller. We will send the weekly phonemes home so that you can support your child. Please continue to read with your child at home and record it in their reading record.
  • Maths: In Reception we will focus on recognising and writing the numbers from zero to twenty. The children will take part in lots of practical addition and subtraction using numbers to 20. We will also be learning about shapes and measures. The children will be able to apply their knowledge of weight and capacity when we do some cooking!es.
